Donald Trump wanted to use 10.000 pentalog soldiers to quell US protests
The White House plans to deploy about 10.000 active-duty soldiers this week to quell protests in the capital, Washington D.C. and in other parts of the United States, a senior defense official told CBS, quoted by the dpa.
Defense Minister Mark Esper and Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley opposed it, writes Agerpres. However, he would have sent about 1,600 active soldiers to the metropolitan region of the US capital, according to the quoted source.
However, the approximately 5,000 members of the US National Guard did not request assistance, and active troops began leaving the area on Thursday night. The White House did not comment on the information, notes the dpa.
Thousands of Americans continued to protest against racism and police brutality in Washington, Philadelphia and New York on Saturday, while a second memorial service was held in North Carolina for African-American George Floyd, whose killing sparked waves of protests around the world.
